Biography

David Byers studied at Queen's University, Belfast 1965-67 and was awarded the Manson Scholarship in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London 1968-72. After a post-graduate year at the RAM he was awarded the Macauley Fellowship by the Irish Arts Council in 1972. That same year the award of a Belgian Government Scholarship enabled him to study with Henri Pousseur at the Lige Conservatoire.

As a composer, David Byers' works cover many genres, including incidental music for Radio 3 plays by Bchner, T.S. Eliot, Seamus Heaney and Tom Paulin, as well as many organ works. He has held commissions from the Ulster Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Ulster Youth Orchestra, Lontano, Concorde and the Arditti and Britten Quartets. David Byers is currently Chief Executive of the Ulster Orchestra.
